It's a sock that your child wears during the night that makes readings that are sent via the sock to the base station and then accounted for in the app so you can read your baby's heart rate and oxygen level in real time. This smart sock has become a symbolic example of how technology can improve the safety and well-being of children and families. It is important to emphasize that you still need to have an overview of your child during their sleep. The readings from the sock will help you gain understanding about your child's health but are no guarantee of avoiding accidents.
Function and technology
The sock uses pulse oximetry technology to monitor and transmit important health information to your mobile via a base station that you easily connect to your wifi. The sock is available in several sizes and can be used alone or together with the Owlet Cam 2. You can choose to buy Owlet Monitor duo for children between 0-18 months or Owlet Monitor Duo for children between 0-5 years. In the package, which is aimed at 0-18 months, you get 2 different sizes of socks and in the package that is between 0-5 years old, 3 different sizes of socks are supplied. It is important that the sock fits well on the foot so that the readings work properly and that the child feels that the sock is comfortable.
Design and quality
The sock is soft and comfortable for the baby to wear, which is important to ensure comfort during the night. We noted that it took some practice to get it to sit correctly, but over time the process became easier. The sock is available in different colors that are aesthetically pleasing and fit nicely on the foot.
Installation and configuration
The installation process was simple and straightforward. That includes downloading the app, connecting the base station, and preparing and charging the sock. We appreciated the smooth configuration and clear instructions.
Security and privacy
Owlet strongly emphasizes the safety and privacy of users. The product is made of child-proof materials and data privacy is well managed with password-protected app. However, it is important to note that the Owlet Smart Sock is not a medical device.
Notifications and Notifications
The base station acts as a hub to send the information from the sock to your app as well as charging the sock. You attach the sock to the base station with magnet for charging. We experienced some false alarms during our test, but found it reassuring that alarms were triggered even if the alarm had nothing to do with the child's health. There are divided opinions regarding smart socks notifications. Some feel that it becomes a great stress when there is a false alarm and therefore do not want to use the sock after a while. We felt that although we received alarms a few times that turned out to be because the sock had slipped to the side or the base station lost connection, we thought that the advantages outweighed the disadvantages. I'd rather have too much alarm that turns out to be harmless than no alarm at all. But it is of course completely up to everyone and therefore worth considering before buying this product. Another thing to keep in mind is to place the base station close by to ensure a strong signal and easy access. This is to prevent alarms if the base station loses drawing and that it is quick to turn off the alarm if it starts.
Owlet Cam Generation 2
Owlet Cam2 HD Video is an advanced upgrade from its predecessor Owlet Cam and comes with a range of enhanced features and refined technology.
Design and functionality
Owlet Cam2 is a stand-alone camera that can be mounted both on a wall and placed on a table. It comes with a mounting kit and a cable cover to minimize the risk of the child pulling the cables. A magnetic mount facilitates adjustment of the camera angle. We have chosen to have the camera stand-alone in our test because we have wanted to test the camera in different places in the home with the possibility of mounting the camera on the wall or similar. The camera comes with a reasonably long cable for those who need a more flexible solution and may need to move the camera from time to time. The bottom plate is quite heavy which makes it easy to place the camera in a bed e.g. without the camera tipping over. The camera can be easily adjusted in its foot to get an optimal angle. It lights up a blue light when the camera is running and the camera reads off the room, the light turns red if someone is watching live via the app. So it's easy to note if one's partner is looking into the camera. We have had the camera at about 1 meter distance from the main part of the bed and experience that the light can be quite bright from the blue lamp. Nothing that is noted by the child, but something we ourselves noticed during the nighttime of children. Since we chose to have the camera detached, we solved it by turning the camera away from the bed when we were present in the room.
HD video and two-way communication
With Owlet Cam 2, the user can enjoy good HD video surveillance 1080p in real time. The camera also offers two-way communication, which means you can talk to your child through the device. The microphone picks up sound well from the room the camera is in. It is so sensitive that we hear sounds via the app even from the room next door that the camera's microphone picks up. It can create some confusion but nothing we think disturbs because you can easily look at the child through the camera and see that everything is right.
The camera's night vision is impressive and allows for clear vision even in low brightness. Its zoom function, with up to 4x digital magnification, and a wide angle of 130 degrees give you great flexibility in how you monitor the room. The quality of the camera is approved, lacks some sharpness.
Security and Encryption
Safety is a top priority according to Owlet Cam2. It uses AES 128-bit encryption and TLS connectivity to the WiFi network, ensuring a relatively secure and private connection. We experience a safer environment with the camera combined with the sock.
