Best smart locks for your home

Electronic locks are probably familiar to everyone in one way or another. But owning one yourself is not as common. The market for smart locks is growing in line with the supply and with the modern family it is almost a must today. Being able to see who is going and coming at different times, opening the door when you are not at home or connecting the lock to the home alarm are some of the valuable features many people demand today.

What should be considered when it comes to smart locks?

Needs analysis As usual, we recommend that you start from your own needs. Think about what features you need to have and choose from there.

Kompatibilnost — Check if the lock fits your door and works with a possible smart home.

Insurance — Always double check with your insurance company what applies when changing the lock.

Aqara has recently launched the Smart Lock U200. This automatic lock comes with support for Matter. Locke also offers more unlocking features such as fingerprint recognition, PIN code, mobile apps, voice assistants, Apple Home key, Aqara NFC card and traditional keys. In addition, this lock requires no Aqara hub!

The idea of the Aqara U200 lock is that it should be a simple installation. You will not need to change the keys or modify the door structure. It is a sk. retrofitted cover, which means it is designed to be able to be installed on existing locks and replace a traditional mechanical lock without having to make major changes or adaptations.

For added security, the lock is encrypted and has tampering alarm and automatic lock function. It also has real-time notifications and Auto lock, which means you can set the lock to lock automatically after a specific period of time after closing the door.

The battery life of the lock is up to 6 months, it also supports the Thread protocol for long-term use. The keypad is IPX5 rated and can be powered by AAA batteries or existing doorbell wire.

The lock can withstand extreme weather conditions, - 15 Celcius and up to +66 Celcius.

This is clearly a smart lock that is at the forefront and has features that most people ask for. In terms of price, the lock is in the middle segment, so it is not the most expensive lock but not among the cheapest either.

One of the later additions for smart locks is Nimly formerly called Easyaccess. The Norwegian company has entered the Swedish market and impresses with its feature-packed smart locks specially developed and designed for the Scandinavian conditions.

Nimly Touch Pro Black is one of the latest additions where you can use your fingerprint to unlock your door, unlike their other Lock Touch which lacks this feature.

The lock also has touch panel for code entry and the ability to use one of the three RFID code tags included to unlock the lock. Three physical keys are also included for added security.

If you want to control your lock via their app and be able to automate your lock with Homey, Homely or Futurehome, you can purchase a gateway and a ZigBee module that you can easily install yourself.

The lock comes in black and silver.

Yale doorman L3S is a well-sold and well-liked lock. Installation can be somewhat demanding and not as easy as a locking door. Keep in mind that the price can skyrocket if you have to hire an installer. An advantage of the lock is the locking piston rotates upwards which increases safety slightly. The lock only works with Yale's own key washers, for better or worse. The advantage is that their own badges are harder to copy than other RFID tags and the downside is that you have to buy Yale badges that cost over 200kr/pc. Three trays are included. The L3S has received an updated end ink from its predecessor L3. The lock itself is the same as the L3.

The lock is an updated version of ID Lock 150. We had hoped for more updates and improvements from ID lock. The lock has a smaller outdoor and indoor module than ID lock 150.

ID Lock 202 is a well-built and robust lock with the right security class. It requires investing time in installation and functionality in order to be fully aware of all the functions of the lock. If you compare the lock with the competitors on the market, then there is more to be desired. ID Lock has some way to go before they can compete with the other players in the market for real.

Glue is so far the only lock on the Swedish market that provides services that facilitate home delivery of e.g. food. Functionally, it is a very simple addition to your existing door lock. It lacks some smart features so here there is more to be desired. A wifi bridge is included to be able to control the lock when you are not at home.

How does a smart lock work?

As a rule, there are two different types of smart locks. First they are the locks that you can install on top of your existing lock and then there are the locks you replace altogether. There are, of course, advantages and disadvantages to both options.

With a lock on top of your existing one, it will be a smoother installation without major intervention. You can also rely on the lock you had before purely for security purposes as well as continue to use the regular key. This can be crucial if you live in an apartment, for example, as some associations do not like changing the locks on the outside.

How to control a smart lock?

You can control a smart lock in several different ways depending on the model. Fingerprint, code, and key tag are just some of the ways. Some locks have a built-in function that locks and unlocks when you go and get home which can be very convenient.

What about the security and smart locks?

With a smart lock, the security risk increases as there are then additional ways for the thief to get in. When signals are sent between the lock and the digital key, thieves can be given the opportunity to read them and copy them. Generally speaking, Bluetooth solutions are more secure than RFID-based solutions.

Where to install a smart lock?

Most electronic locks are battery operated and therefore require that there be plus degrees on the inside of the door. So be careful about installing the lock in an outdoor shed or similar.

Does my smart lock work in the event of a power outage?

Since most smart locks are battery-powered, there is no problem. What can mess up is if the internet connection at home goes down, then it is not possible to control the lock when you are not at home. All smart locks are designed so that you can open the door from the inside even if the batteries run out. It is also possible in some cases to connect a battery to the lock from the outside to unlock the lock.

What is a smart lock and how can I get use of it?

Smart locks are the latest technology in the lock industry and offer a variety of features that make it easier and safer to unlock and lock the door. These locks can be controlled using an app on your smartphone or a remote control, making it possible to unlock the door without having to carry keys with you.

One of the biggest advantages of installing a smart lock is the flexibility it provides. You can give access to your home to other people, such as family members or tradesmen, without having to hand over keys. It also allows you to see who has unlocked the door and when it happened, which can be useful in cases of burglary or other unrest.

Smart locks can also be integrated with other smart home devices, such as motion sensors and cameras, to create a safer environment. For example, you can get a notification when someone unlocks the door when you are not home, or get a video recording when it happens.

But there are also disadvantages of smart locks. One of the biggest is that they can be more expensive to install and maintain than traditional locks. They can also depend on power or the internet to work, so if there were to be a power outage or internet failure you would not be able to unlock the door. Therefore, be sure to choose a smart lock that has a backup function, such as physical keys.

It's also important to be aware that smart locks can be vulnerable to hackers, although most manufacturers take security seriously and offer multiple layers of protection.

Overall, smart locks are a good choice for those who want more flexibility, security and control over their home. But it is important to think through all the pros and cons before proceeding with the installation.

How is a complete lock house different from a lock door?

There are two main types of smart locks: those that replace the entire lock housing and those that replace just the lock door.

A smart lock that replaces the entire lock housing is a complete system that includes both mechanical and electronic parts. It is usually easy to install and can often be connected to an app on your smartphone or a remote control to unlock and lock the door. These locks can also be equipped with additional features such as allowing access to other people, seeing who unlocked the door and when it happened, and integrating with other smart home devices to create a safer environment.

A smart lock that only replaces the lock handle is a slightly simpler system that usually consists of an electronic lock door that is mounted on the existing lock housing. It's usually a bit cheaper than replacing the entire lock housing, and easier to install. But it does not provide the same amount of features as a complete smart lock. Many people living in condominiums choose this type of smart lock to minimize damage to the outside of the door because many associations do not allow this.

So in summary, a complete smart lock replaces the entire lock housing while a smart lock switch only replaces the mechanical lock knob and is installed on the existing lock housing and does not provide the same features.

How can a smart lock help me open the door for different types of deliveries?

A smart lock can help you open the door for different types of deliveries in several different ways:

  1. Provide temporary access to vendors: You can provide temporary access to your home for vendors, such as postmen or food deliverymen, by creating a temporary code. This can be done most often through the app on your smartphone.
  2. Schedule Access: You can also schedule access to your home for specific times and dates, so that the door will automatically open to vendors at the time you have chosen.
  3. Provide access using a virtual key: Some smart locks offer the ability to create a virtual key that can be shared with vendors, allowing them to unlock the door using their smartphone or a special device.
  4. Provide access using an automatic opener: Some smart locks also have an automatic opener feature, where the door opens automatically when a verified person or device approaches.
  5. Integration with other systems: Smart locks can also be integrated with other systems, such as cameras or motion sensors, so you can see who opens the door and when it happens.

By using these features, you can easily manage deliveries and give suppliers access to your home without having to be there yourself.
