We have tested the new Homey Bridge!

We have previously written a lot about Homey Bridge. Now the long-awaited hub has finally been launched in the Swedish stores. So what is Homey Bridge and who is it for?

This is Athom's cheaper model that allows you to pair your smart gadgets. It comes in the same new design as Homey Pro 2023 with a slight difference in color. The new design makes it easier to place in the home and does not take up as much space.

There are some differences between Homey Bridge and Homey Pro that you should know before making your purchase choice. One of the main differences between Homey Bridge and Homey pro is the price. Homey Bridge starts at about 799kr which is significantly lower than Pro. The cloud-based service is also completely free up to five devices. This will allow you to quickly and inexpensively start automating your home on a smaller scale and learn how Homey and its powerful features work.

How does Homey work?

By having brands or enthusiasts code apps for the Homey platform, you can install these to your Homey. By installing e.g. The IKEA app and you can then connect IKEA smart home gadgets to your Homey. Pretty quickly, you're sitting on a platform with the ability to automate devices from different brands under one app. Homey currently supports over 50,000 different devices. Maybe you have lights from both Philips Hue and Plejd at home and want them to turn on with a single command? Then Homey is a good option.

Homey's App

The app is easy to understand and has undergone many improvements over the years. Setting up your Homey Bridge with the app goes smoothly and quickly. It can take a while to get acquainted with so-called flows and understand how automations work if you have never done it before. Here are some screenshots from the Homey's app when you install it to get started.

The app is free to download and start using. You don't need a Homey to get started and use the app. The Homey Bridge really only serves as a communications hub that can talk to devices directly through their antennas for different standards.

Homey Premium

When you achieve more than five units, you will need to upgrade to Homey Premium. Then you will be able to add an unlimited number of devices as well as access the Insights and Logic that we describe a little further down. The price is currently 35SEK/month and this applies to the entire household. It is therefore possible to have several users on the same subscription. When you buy a Homey Bridge, it includes 3 months of free Premium.

Logica

Logic for Homey can be a very powerful tool if you are a little more advanced user. You get access to variables such as numbers, text, and booleans. Here you can learn more about Logic.

Insights

Insights is a tool in the Homey app where you can follow all your devices over time. For example, you can see your electricity consumption or temperature on devices that measure this. Read more about Insights here.

What features do I get with Homey Bridge?

The Homey Bridge has numerous antennas and other transmitters.

- Bluetooth
- Wifi
- RF/Infrared

With these communication protocols, you can control devices in the home directly whether you are at home or not. Unfortunately, Homey Bridge cannot communicate with other devices over Wifi in your home.
